Diagnosis of Canine Hypothyroidism
نویسنده
چکیده
The image we have of canine hypothyroidism has changed during the last decade. We use to consider it as the most common endocrinopathy in dogs. Most endocrinologists will agree that nowadays, other endocrine diseases such as hypercortisolism, are more frequently observed. In the past, many dogs have been erroneously diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Indeed, evaluation of thyroid function in dogs is not always straightforward. The vague and nonspecifi c clinical signs of hypothyroidism and the fact that numerous factors can infl uence thyroid function test results are major contributors to the diffi culty in diagnosing this disease.

Authors almost always refer to hypothyroidism as a common (if not the most common) endocrine disease in dogs, I but there is little evidence to support this claim. In fact, canine hypothyroidism may be one of the most over -diagnosed diseases in small animal medicine. Just about any medical disorder can be associated with decreases in circulating concentrations of thyroid hormone, causing hypot...

OBJECTIVE To determine if concentrations of free thyroxine (FT4) measured by semi-automated chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) correspond to FT4 determined by equilibrium dialysis (ED) in hypothyroid dogs positive for thyroglobulin antibody (TGA). ANIMALS Thirteen TGA-positive dogs classified as hypothyroid based on subnormal FT4 concentrations by ED. METHODS Qualitative assessment of cani...
متن کاملDiagnosis of Canine Hypothyroidism: Case-based Approach
The approach to a dog with no known non-thyroidal illness (e.g. renal disease, neurological disease, neoplasia, etc.) vs. a dog with non-thyroidal illness is a bit different. In dogs with no known non-thyroidal illness the diagnosis is more straightforward. Starting with a measurement of total T4 alone is reasonable and economical. If total T4 is normal, it is highly unlikely that the dog is hy...
متن کاملThyroid Disease and Autoimmune Thyroiditis
Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of canines, and up to 80% of cases result from autoimmune (lymphocytic) thyroiditis. The heritable nature of this disorder poses significant genetic implications for breeding stock. Thus, accurate diagnosis of the early compensatory stages of canine autoimmune thyroiditis leading up to hypothyroidism affords important genetic and clinical opt...
